Hey guys,
After nearly having a heart attack because of all the frustration I’ve had to deal with due to the site being down, I’m happy to say that it is now back online!! I spent the past day moving the entire database of articles, authors, comments, etc. to a new server at a new host. My old host was incredibly unhelpful and pretty much left me with a “sorry, too bad” kind of response to all of my questions. I’ll admit that I’m slightly technically challenged when it comes to moving an entire site between different servers on different hosts. This is something that I wasn’t really expecting to have to do, but I thought that even if I did, I would at least have some time to figure it out rather than having it thrown in my face.
Fortunately, I found a host called Inmotion hosting. They were incredibly helpful and they always answered my support questions within about 30 minutes. To compare, my old host would sometimes take 3 hours or more…not good when you’re running a site that has over 50,000 members. For those of you who are familiar with hosting and running your own website you know how important it can be to have good tech support on the other end of the line.
Ubscure is now running on a virtual private server (VPS). For those of you who aren’t familiar with this term it basically means that this site is now able to access more resources to run faster. At my old host, Ubscure was running on what’s known as a shared server. A shared server can have hundreds of other sites on it and this can really cause problems if you have a big site like Ubscure on it. Hopefully we won’t ever run into anything as serious as this most recent problem has been.
With Ubscure being down I couldn’t even access the files I needed to send emails to inform my users of what was going on. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused any of you.
